It’s no secret that the hustle and bustle of life can often rob us of our precious beauty rest. We’re not trying to be cute—your sleep really is precious and should be treated as such. It can determine our appearance, mood, performance and work/school, and most importantly, our health.
This is why it’s essential to set a sleep schedule. There’s always going to be an excuse for you not to hit the sheets—you have emails to return, shows to catch up on or a party to attend. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional all-nighter, and we like a party just as much as the next guy, but not every night. Continuously ditching your mattress can severely affect your health and mental state, which is why we compiled a list of three tips to help you stick to a sleep routine and achieve 7-8 hours of sleep.
Take it One Step at a Time
If you’re use to going to bed after midnight every night, falling asleep by 10:00 is not going to happen immediately. Gradually go to bed earlier every night, to allow your body time to adjust to your new bedtime. For the first three nights, go to bed at 11:45, then go to bed at 11:30 for the next few days, and continues until your comfortable with 10:00.
Stick to it
Consistency is key when setting any routine. Choose your bedtime and wake-up time and remain loyal to those times. We all want to sleep in on the weekends, which is fine, but try not to sleep in over two hours passed your normal wake-up time.
Avoid the Midnight Snacks & Nightcaps
Did you know eating too close to your bedtime can affect you shut-eye? We’re not saying go to bed hungry—that’s never a good idea—but try to pick a specific time to eat and stick to it. You’re last heavy meal should be at least 2 hours before going to bed. If you’re craving a snack, keep it light, with crackers, cheese or toast. It’s also essential that you stay away from liquid just before bed, so you’re bladder doesn’t disturb you in the middle of the night.
